December release - 20081220
Tuesday, 23 December 2008 22:21

Alright! December release is ready and published

For a full feature list have a look at the current feature set, or the ChangeLog. It would be completely pointless to list them all here.

Interesting updates include: reintegration of madwifi drivers + tools and keymap selection fix.
About the latter: the first release included a buggy genkernel version, I had no choice except use that one. The 2nd and 3rd releases, instead, were bugged by a fault of mine. I took the templates from the 2007.1 release, and reworked them. I never cared about the livecd/rcadd variable though, since all the hardware detection stuff was done via bootloader (gentoo acpi=on......) or with manual commands on exotic setups. Shortly, in the installcd-stage2 spec file the keymaps and consolefont rc scripts were specified, overriding the user selection done earlier (dokeymaps boot variable, on by default). Obviously, since /etc/conf.d/keymaps defaults to "us" keymap, it seemed like a bug in the selection script, and not in the boot sequence itself. Luckily the full spec file recheck allowed me to spot this issue.

I will publish the spec files also, but I'll also begin to write a script for automatic spec generation.

Enjoy this Christmas present, and have fun ;)

Cheers,
Fabio Scaccabarozzi

December release preview
Saturday, 13 December 2008 13:40

Hi all! As you've seen the template has been changed again. This is the ultimate solution for clearer reading (this one scales to the optimal page width). Also, some sections have been reorganized (look, font size) and the overlay section has been completed.

I'm currently working on the new release. My will was to update python+portage to the latest version (2.5.2-rX + 2.2_rcY) but while this works fine on the amd64 arch, on the i686 one there seems to be some ordering issue concealing ncurses/nano when emerging that leads to stage3 failure. If this doesn't get fixed before the 22nd of December in portage 2.2 I'll drop those two features and stick with the mainline ones; since portage 2.1.6.1 is already out I may move to that one instead (will check the ChangeLog for differences, if there's something one may want from the "stable" setup).
Other major (currently working&included) updates include: gcc-4.3.2, linux-headers-2.6.27-r2 and the latest glibc snapshot, currently 2.8_p20080602-r1, this afternoon's snapshot will use 2.9_p20081201. Glibc 2.8 and 2.9 include simple memory optimizations that provide heavy performance boosts (before 2.8 I used to compile glibc in ~40 minutes, now I can compile 2.9 in ~25mins). I'm also waiting for 2.6.28 kernel to come out (will be soon I guess, since we're at 2.6.27.8).

Current feature requests include:

  • madwifi-ng reintegration
  • iotop, smartmontools, hddtemp & some more monitoring tools

Talking of the server, I'm currently setting up email through postfix, this will require some time. Once that is done I will setup a submission form.

Cheers,
Fabio Scaccabarozzi

Grand opening
Tuesday, 04 November 2008 18:47

Well well, after a lot of time spent learning Joomla, Apache, MySQL and configuring them, I'm proud to annouce the opening of a semi-definitive site.

The main section, dedicated to my liveCDs, is ready. The other ones (being only "Scripts" right now) are still work in progress. Stay tuned for news, and update your bookmarks.

Cheers,

Hi all! This is my first article on this site. It is mainly intended for testing purposes (see how joomla works, layout&so on). Hopefully I'll be able to setup the website this week. Check it back soon!

Cheers,
